Seaside Reminiscence

'I was very impressed with the effort and attention to detail CTY put into the ‘Beside the Seaside’ activity session they delivered to our Memory Café.  It was really appreciated by all of our members who joined in the many activities offered.  The session evoked happy memories of their childhood holidays. We are eagerly anticipating our next session with Culture to You next month.

Where we Went

Oadby Memory Cafe– Barnabas Centre, St Pauls Church
The Memory Café is run by the Rotary Club of Oadby and enables people living with dementia and their carers to meet up in a warm relaxing atmosphere and engage socially with people in similar situations. They meet on Tuesday mornings

What we Took

What we Did

Memories of seaside holidays were shared, dreams of warm beaches explained, and thoughtful conversation was had. These were sparked from exploring multisensory objects in our Seaside Memory box, which included books & pictures, dress up and games.  People who wanted a quieter experience watched a “times gone by” DVD which showcased holidays from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Taking photos using our beach themed scene setters were encouraged and we finished the session with a group sing along.

At the end of the session, the book bag and craft bag – as well as resource materials were loaned to the group leader so that they could revisit the seaside for their next session and use items from the box independently. Photos of the resulting collages were shared with the CTY team.
