Oadby Library Multi-Sensory Project

Oadby Library has been working with artist Sophie Mahon on an exciting multi-sensory project.

Over 150 participants joined her at the library for a series of exciting and engaging workshops themed around sound, light, touch and colour. They encouraged child and parent interaction, and activities ranged from musical tables, sensory floor pads, texture play trays and more!

Dedicated Special Educational Needs sessions with smaller numbers and consideration of sensory impact for children who are easily overwhelmed were offered as were outreach sessions at the local children and family’s hub.

Co-creating with Early Years!

Early years as an audience posed an interesting challenge- how do you co-create with that age group. Sophie rose to this challenge! During the workshops she observed how the children interacted and played with the different activities and at the end of each one captured feedback from the parents on what they thought their child enjoyed; capturing their opinions ideas and creative inputs on what could make a good sensory space.

Bringing together these observations and feedback she then devised the idea of a multisensory area that would use elements of projection and a ‘den-like’ feel which were successful in the workshop.

The space includes a magnetic board for mark-making and story development, a light box for tracing and working with Perspex shapes, a player bespoke soundscapes as well as stories, and a ‘multisensory wall’ with cogs, low-noise musical instruments and ‘busy board’ doors and latches.
