Finding Out About Your Local Area
Loughborough’s Adult Learning Group has supported many projects in the Library and Charnwood Museum. Their aims to get learners involved in their local area have given them the drive to explore how they can give back to their local community while improving their own skills in the process.
One such project has improved Charnwood Museum’s accessibility. The group guided the plan for a social story around the museum, a piece of work that focuses on the details of the site that you may find helpful to know before arriving. This includes knowing where the nearest disabled parking is, the nearest changing places toilet and the sorts of things you can expect to see in the museum. This is a quick way of giving people the tools to feel empowered about their visit, giving them key information to make the experience easier for people.
Once the planning was complete the learners got involved both in front and behind the camera! Taking part in photography and filming days, they were able to have a go using a professional camera as well as modelled in the museum demonstrating the displays.

The group have more recently been supporting the My Jewellery My Story project. This is a topic inspired by the Cossington necklace which you can read more about here. The learners have been invited to give their experience of what jewellery means to them through craft workshops such as giant bead making and scrapbooking. Their work will be part of the wider exhibition going into Charnwood Museum in 2025!
