Harborough Adult Learners at Work
This year, Culture Leicestershire’s Volunteer Team has had the pleasure of co-curating two new display cases with Market Harborough’s Learning for Independence group. The class meets at The Cube on Thursdays and creates artwork while learning employability skills.
Twelve creatives from the group contributed to Harborough Museum’s new temporary exhibition, ‘Harborough at Work’, co-curating displays in the Museum’s Local Studies Area. They had fun drawing, writing, and sculpting artwork inspired by their experiences working and volunteering in the town. They also took a trip to Harborough Museum to learn about what working life used to look like in Market Harborough and made scrapbooks inspired by their visit.
The group were then welcomed back to the museum to curate their displays in two large glass cases. They found their artworks and split into two teams, the first team helped craft an exhibition banner while the second worked with a museum professional to learn about display curation. They learnt tricks for making their artwork stand out and talked about the accessibility needs of the public to decide how to position text panels. Once they finished their display, the groups switched, giving everyone a chance to get involved in both activities.
‘Harborough Adult Learners at Work’ is on display in the Harborough Museum Local Studies Area from October 16th. We hope you enjoy visiting the displays as much as we enjoyed creating them!
This isn’t the end of Harborough’s Adult Learners collaboration with Harborough Museum and Library. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership into the new year investigating the accessibility of our spaces.
